This has been my favorite recipe of 2022. It's pretty easy, and tastes better than any General Tso's chicken I've had at a restaurant. I originally found it on Reddit, and adjusted the recipe to my taste. This recipe is very flexible. You can swap out the bell peppers for whatever other firm vegetable you prefer or have on hand - I'm sure broccoli would work well. You can also adjust how spicy it is by skipping some of the hot peppers and decreasing the amount of red pepper flakes you use. The popcorn chicken you use will make a big difference in this recipe. I like to use popcorn chicken that has more robust breading.
Ingredients
- 1 bag popcorn chicken
- 1 bottle (or about 300ml) General Tso's sauce
- 1 tbsp gochujang
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 2-3 bell peppers, cored and sliced (I like to use green and yellow for this recipe)
- one half yellow or sweet onion, chopped
- 1 bulb garlic, minced
- 2 banana peppers, cored and sliced
- 2 serrano peppers, cored and diced
- 1 habanero pepper, cored and diced
- 1/2 tbsp red pepper flakes
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 cup rice
Directions
- Start cooking the popcorn chicken. I bake it in the oven.
- Start cooking the rice separately.
- Heat the butter, olive oil, and sesame oil in a wok or very large frying pan over medium/high heat.
- Add the garlic and red pepper flakes and saute until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Be careful, the garlic can burn pretty quickly if you're using a wok.
- Add the chopped onion and saute for another minute or so. Then add the hot peppers, banana peppers, and finally the bell peppers. Stir it all around and keep sauteing until the bell pepper is a little soft, about 5 minutes.
- Rinse down the sides of the wok with soy sauce and stir it all up, then add the General Tso's sauce and gochujang. Mix everything together and reduce heat to low.
- Once the chicken is done and the sauce is bubbling a little, add the chicken and mix it all together. Serve with rice.
